The Best Smart Doorbells You Can Buy - February 2019

Smart doorbells can be a pretty useful product to add to your home. As these will allow you to see who is at the door, whether you are home or not. It also allows you to keep an eye on the front of your house, pretty easily. And with many packages getting stolen from porches these days, that is definitely a great feature to have. However, there are many smart doorbells out there. Which ones are the best ones to buy? Well we have rounded up the best smart doorbells currently available.

As always, these are the best smart doorbells that are available on store shelves today, not those that have only been announced. But ones you can order and have in your home within a couple of days.

Ring Video Doorbell Pro

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro is the highest-end model from the company (now owned by Amazon) and it does cost a pretty penny - around $250. But it is more than worth the money.

This doorbell is thinner than most others, so it blends in a bit better in front of your home. It does still have a camera built-in. And this camera is capable of recording in 1080p resolution. It also has infrared night vision, allowing you to see in the dark, whether your porch light is on or not.

Ring will send you alerts when motion is detected, or when visitors press the doorbell. So if USPS delivers a package and doesn't ring your doorbell, you will still get a notification that your package has been delivered. You can also view live video (as well as recorded video) from the doorbell on your smartphone with the Ring app.

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro does work with Alexa too, so that Echo devices around your home will send announcements when the doorbell is pressed or motion is detected. You can also talk to whoever is at the door through your Echo.

As mentioned, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro is priced at $249, which is somewhat expensive, but it is worth it. You can pick it up from Amazon using the link below.

Nest Hello Video Doorbell

If you are already heavily invested in the Nest ecosystem (their thermostats, smoke detectors, cameras, etc) then the Nest Hello is going to be the best option for you. This is because it will work with your other Nest products, all within the same app.

The video camera on the Nest Hello does offer up 1600x1200 resolution video. The resolution is a bit different from others because it is a wider camera. So instead of the usual 16:9 it's actually 4:3. This is because the Nest Hello uses a 160-degree field-of-view on its camera. With this wider angle, the Nest Hello is able to see your entire front yard, so nothing can be hidden.

Like others, this does also send you notifications when someone presses the doorbell, or when there is motion detected. With the app on your phone, there is the option of talking to whoever is at the door, through the two-way audio that the doorbell has. So you can answer the door, or tell the FedEx person to leave your package on the porch.

There is Google Assistant support available here, which will allow you to pull up the live feed from the Nest Hello onto your smart display or your TV. You can also have it set to notify you through your Google Home when someone presses the doorbell or when motion occurs. Unfortunately, there is no Amazon Alexa support here, since the two companies do not work together too well, and Nest is owned by Google.

The Nest Hello is typically priced at $229, however you can find it for just $203 at Newegg right now. That price likely won't be around for long, however.

Arlo Audio Doorbell

One of the big differences between the Arlo doorbell and the others on this list is the fact that there is no camera here. That does make the Arlo Audio Doorbell much cheaper at just $69, however. The reason why there's no camera here, is that Arlo figures you already have at least one of its popular, wire-free cameras, which can be placed outside your home, or even in a window inside. So instead of including another camera, it made the doorbell cheaper by not including one.

The Arlo Audio Doorbell will sync with other cameras that you have outside your home. Allowing you to get more angles outside, which is a pretty nice thing to have here. If you are already invested in the Arlo ecosystem and have some of its cameras, then this is definitely a good option for you to pick up. It's pretty simple to install.

Another advantage to the Arlo Audio Doorbell is that it works with your existing doorbell chime. So you don't need to install a new one. It also doesn't need any wiring and is weatherproof. So you can put it outside anywhere, and not worry about it getting damaged. Which is definitely a good thing here.

The Arlo Audio Doorbell is by far the cheapest smart doorbell on this list, and you can pick it up from Amazon for just $69 using the link below.

August Doorbell Cam Pro

This smart doorbell is actually the most minimal of those on this list. It is a square, which mostly holds the button for pressing the doorbell, with the camera just above it. This makes it easy to see to hide the camera, until someone is actually at the door. So you can catch package thieves even easier.

This doorbell works with Amazon Alexa, allowing you to talk to whoever is at the door and also get announcements when someone is at the door. There's no Google Assistant support, however.

The August Doorbell Cam Pro does record in HD - not full HD unfortunately. With two-way audio, you can see and talk to whoever is at the door, and that includes when you are not home. Even if you are at work, you can have peace of mind knowing that your home is protected all day long.

It will also record everything that happens in front of your house. So if someone broke in or stole a package, you can go back and see exactly who it was, to help the police catch that person. There is a free package that will keep 24 hours worth of recordings. There are paid options that will keep them even longer.

Like the majority of other doorbells on this list, the August Doorbell Cam Pro is also very simple to install, and it gives you detailed instructions on how to install the doorbell.

The August Doorbell Cam Pro is available from Amazon for $199.99 and you can pick it up using the link below.

Ring Video Doorbell 2

If you liked the first doorbell on this list, but wanted something a bit less expensive, well the Ring Video Doorbell 2 is the one for you. It's about $50 cheaper, but still has all of the features of the Ring Video Doorbell Pro.

The Ring Video Doorbell 2 is one of the most popular video doorbells out there right now, and that is because it is such a good doorbell. It does have a camera built-in like almost all the others on this list. This camera is capable of recording in full HD resolution and does also have infrared night vision. So even at night, you'll be able to see what is going on outside your home.

Ring will send you alerts when it sees motion or when someone presses the button on the doorbell. This means that even if someone doesn't want you to know they came to the door, you will know thanks to the notifications. There is two-way audio available, allowing you to communicate with whoever is at the door through your smartphone.

Alexa support is also available on the Ring Video Doorbell 2, which will chime on your Echo devices when someone rings the doorbell. You can also talk to them through your Echo smart speaker.

The Ring Video Doorbell 2 is available from Amazon for about $199, though it does typically drop to around $149-$169 often. You can pick it up from the link below.

Wrap Up

Smart doorbells are pretty impressive products for the smart home. It's not only important to keep an eye on the inside of your home, but also the outside. And having a camera right outside your front door means that you're going to be able to know what is going on at all times out there.

These smart doorbells do range from $70 to $249, which is a pretty big difference, but you really can't go wrong with any of these. However, the Arlo Audio Doorbell is really only good for those that have Arlo's cameras already installed in their home. Otherwise, the Ring doorbells are going to be the better option.
